Minecraft – my review.
My very own review: Minecraft, from studios Mojang, created by Jens “Jeb” Bergensten and Markus “Notch” Persson.
Ok, here is an interesting story. I began to notice a trending app a few months back on my son’s IPAD : Minecraft PE. It looked like on the screenshots a version of LEGO , where you construct some blocks things, and that’s it. Nice for kids and ladies… However, after a while I noticed that the app was one of the top apps. So I decided to test it out! I bought Minecraft pocket edition (PE in short), and downloaded it on 2 IPADS, as well as NEXUS 7. It’s when I understood that something fantastic was created.
The ability to play in a cubic 3D world, multiplayer! A few types of scenarios: Survival, where you have to… survive (food, weapons, clothes, monsters at night), Hardcore, which is survival with one life and creative where you are a god-like figure creating your own world. Already this is a fun game for me and the kids, where of course fighting between players can erupt, and at the end, one of the kid would cry! Sorry guys!
Then, a comment caught my eyes on Apple Store, where someone was saying that the pocket edition was nothing compared to the PC / MAC Edition !
Here we went again, I re-discovered Minecraft ! First on my MAC, then on my Windows computer, and even on my Raspberry PI (smaller edition). Better design, huge worlds! Lots of NPCs (Villagers for instance…) Survival and Creative worlds must better that PE.
However, and this is the best thing that happened to me since irc. The possibility to create Minecraft servers: with a bunch of plug-ins and cool stuff. I directly downloaded the server, installed on my Linux box and offered my server to players. Of course I took long nights and hours during work break to make something quite acceptable. Moreover, I found a bunch of different server styles ! Hunger games, survival, creative, guilds, financial, hardcore, etc. containing a very big community of players. Of course, the usual problems with community: Hackers, Bullies, Bashers, Crazies – But it wouldn’t be the same without them anyways. Some servers even have a local economy on!
Minecraft is completely worth the (around) 18 GBP to register to it, and is one of the biggest hit ever I believe. There even is an XBOX 360 version. Hopefully more versions and port will come by.
