Origami Stroller – Review

An interesting experiment: a 3 year old toddler, London and an American stroller.

Origami is deemed to be an high tech stroller from the US, with and interesting feature of auto-folding and unfolding. The product is made by a Pittsburgh company named 4Moms.

First thing to know is that when you receive a huge parcel from the US (Origami stroller is big), you will have it stuck at the customs of your majesty for a week. Also, since the size of the shipping fees through UPS or FEDEX is the price of the stroller, its common sense to send it via USPS. The main problem of USPS is that they rely on local delivery services to make the goods arrive at your destination.
In the United Kingdom, the local delivery man is a state company named “Royal Mail”. Not the best service and one of the scariest for the handling of packages. Anyhow, after 2 good weeks, Origami finally came.

Having it unpacked, noticeably the stroller is a bit bigger than it’s European counterparts, which is not bad, as it seems a lot more comfortable.

A few interesting features:

– Self powered, and self rechargeable. (when you walk around with it)
– US plug in case you run out of battery.
– Lights, like a car yes !
– Folding/Unfolding feature
– LCD screen that gives you some information:
* is a kid in the stroller?
* What temperature in degrees F is it?
* How many miles done?
* Speed in mph.
– Strolls swiftly

Using James, a 3 years old toddler, we then try to walk the little guys out in London. First thing is that James actually seems to enjoy the comfort provided. He even sleeps after a around ten minutes. (Same on retries).

A short-coming, there is no rain cover. That’s a big problem for cities like London where rain and cold are Omni-present. Digging a bit at a local John Lewis good store, it would seem that the Quiny rain cover is about good to be used on the Origami. The LCD screen seems however to survive rain.

Another temporary short coming is that the Origami is advertised to enable you to recharge your Iphone/pod/pad while you are going around.
After a very small investigative work, it would seem that this charger is not available yet and will be out at the end of February.

It’s not a conventional High Tech toy of course, but let’s admit it, it is actually quite unique on the market. You can see people stare at you with deep interest when you wink with the lights at night. (night in London is at around 4pm at this time of the year). Now, of course arriving at a restaurant and auto-folding the stroller brings real question marks: Where can i get this , price , etc.

The price tag is around 500 GBP without delivery (add 100 GBP for this), which places the Origami in the luxury range, below the Bugaboo. Still, even with the temporary issues, Origami is a very cool stroller to have, fun for the parents and the kids.
